Common Names for Quartz Countertops

Quartz by any other name is still quartz, but what exactly are those names. Here is a list of the most common:

• Quartz
• Engineered Stone
• Fabricated Stone
• Man-Made Stone
• Caesarstone (Actually a brand name)
• Silestone (A brand name as well)

What are Quartz Countertops?

Well as the name suggest the are countertop material that is made of a natural mineral called quartz. The quartz is mined then ground up into small pieces. The pieces are then “glued” back together with a resin that is mixed with color. The end result is a solid material that is highly durable, non-porous, and can be made to any color. That’s a great combination for a kitchen countertop material. As one of the biggest benefits of quartz countertops is that you don’t need to seal them ever.

What are the Pros and Cons of Quartz Countertops?

Pros:

• Low Maintenance – No need to seal the countertop
• One of the Strongest Materials – Made up of mostly quartz which gives the countertop it’s strength.
• Not brittle – Due to the resin added the countertop is not brittle so it makes it easier than other stone countertops to do certain countertops
• Scratch Resistant – The quartz in the stone is harder than stainless steel so you can cut on your counter with not problems just need to sharpen your knifes a bit more often.
• Large Color Selection – The only stone material you can get non-natural colors in. Great for designers.
• More Modern Look – Solid, Uniform colors, and patterns mixed with clean lines gives quartz countertops a modern look.

Cons:

• Not as Heat Resistant – It’s not recommended to put hot pans on the them. They won’t melt like Formica countertops but you can get burn spots if something is too hot.
• Most colors look man-made – It’s a man-made product so expect a more man-made look. More uniform patterns and less art look. New colors have recently come out that look more like a natural stone. However, if you are looking for the uniform look then the colors of quartz are a really good choice.
• Not Natural Stone – If  you’re looking for a natural product look to granite or marble.
• Not all quartz products perform the same – Only buy from a reputable fabricator a quality brand. There are many brands of quartz and some cheaper products do not perform as well as the better brands.
• Slab Sizes can Restrict Design – Generally, the material sizes of quartz are smaller then granite which can make it difficult to make large countertop sections without a seam.
• Cost – Not the cheapest stone material option. Prices also vary based on color and slab needed to complete the project.

Are Quartz Countertops good Kitchen Countertops?

Quartz countertops are great kitchen countertops. Out of any “man-made” countertop materials, they provide the most benefits and the least downsides. Most people who choose quartz for their kitchen countertops due so either for the reason they like the modern look or they like the fact you never need to seal the countertop. The best way to know for sure if you are going to like a quartz countertop is to come down and see some samples. With natural stone and man-made stone, you may not realize what you actually like until you see it up close and talk it through with a professional.
